DriveShare lets you rent your dream car from a car collector

The peer-to-peer car-sharing service opens doors to classic and exotic cars

For a car collector, a barn find is basically like hitting the automotive jackpot. (A barn find is a term for a car that’s been sitting idle and unloved until it is rediscovered.) But even collector cars that are well tended to don’t often get driven enough. To keep an old car sharp, it needs to be taken out of the garage and put on the road. For collectors that can’t find the time, there’s a new solution.

Hagerty, a classic car insurance company, is launching DriveShare, a new peer-to-peer car-sharing service for exotic and classic cars. After being vetted and making a $500 deposit, users get up to $1 million of rental protection and can search for available cars in their region. Roadside assistance is included in the fees, a must for old rides that often need extra TLC to keep them running smoothly.

At writing, there are 135 cars available to rent across the US, a number that is expected to increase as more collectors get involved with the service. Like other peer-to-peer car-sharing services Turo and Getaround, users can both rent and lease their cars, a convenient way to pay off car insurance bills or subsidize garage rental on second, third, and fourth cars.

As an insurer and a staple in the car-collecting community, Hagerty is well suited to earn the trust of collectors that might be skeptical of letting precious cars out of their hands. Hagerty stages events for customers to learn how to drive vintage makes and models. Hagerty emphasizes the point that old cars need love, too.

“DriveShare gives people an easy way to get behind the wheel of cars they’ve always wanted to drive,” said CEO McKeel Hagerty in a statement. “Our goal is to provide a common platform that connects enthusiasts and owners to expand the community of people who love cars.”

In addition to vintage rides, there are new exotics advertised. They come at a steep price, though, such as a 2015 Lamborghini Aventador for $3,300 per day in Venice, California.

Cars currently listed on the site range from a 2005 Ferrari F430 for $1,300 / day in Farmingdale, New York, a 1981 Delorean in Jamul, California for $800 / day, and a Porsche Boxster for $99 / day in Roanoke, Virginia. It’s part of Hagerty’s acquisition of the Cape Cod, Massachusetts-based Classics & Exotics, which originated the concept in 2014. Classics & Exotics founder Peter Zawadzki will serve as the director of DriveShare.

In addition to turning heads, driving a vintage car, even for a day, is a nice way to take a digital detox from all those screens.
